The Real Marker of Class Is How Deeply You Master What You Love

The characteristic that best reveals a person’s true social tier is, in fact, not their wealth or power alone.

Ordinary people tend to think that judging someone’s class is straightforward — just look at their money and position.

But we all know that while these are important indicators, they’re neither the most reliable nor the most definitive measures.

From my own perspective, I’ve witnessed the rise and fall of far too many so-called big shots and industry leaders to know one thing clearly: the flower that blooms too brightly rarely lasts. True strength is built over one or two generations of dedicated effort — until you’ve genuinely embedded yourself into a tier and its inner circles. That is the real answer.

So let’s come back to the point. Specifically: how do you judge whether someone has the natural aptitude to rise into the upper tiers?

In Master Chi’s view, the answer is this: the person knows how to play — and they take whatever they love and master it completely, until it becomes their defining craft.

Many people reading this won’t understand — what does any of this have to do with how far someone goes in life?

Everything. And the correlation is extremely strong.

Think about it this way: everything in life — career, marriage, wealth, connections, every resource we manage — is, at its core, a set of intricate little puzzles.

Every single thing can be continuously upgraded and advanced through deep research and careful thought, ultimately yielding real results.

Take real estate investment. Outsiders always assume it’s just a bunch of unsophisticated people hoarding properties. That’s not the case. Two people can both invest in real estate — one might achieve pure capital appreciation, while another keeps multiplying their portfolio, splitting and stacking holdings again and again.

What creates that difference? Is it really a difference in starting point? Not quite. What separates them is the latter’s comprehensive mastery of policy, technique, capital management, cost calculation, and financing channels.

That’s why so many people love to blame bad luck and poor timing. Nonsense. They’re simply weak, lazy, and unwilling to put in the work to go beneath the surface of the rules — to cut straight to the heart of the game.

The same applies to investing. Many readers on my Zhishixingqiu (a paid knowledge platform) admire me, because within a small circle, I seem to perform impressively — I appear to have a nose for 10x opportunities.

But laid out honestly? It’s not worth much on its own. It comes purely from going through certain experiences early on, combined with genuine passion for the subject — which is why I can “see through” so many opportunities.

Similarly, many people feel their career is stuck and stalled, as if someone is holding them down or their timing is simply off. This is a defeatist, stray-dog mentality.

Here’s the thing: the dead ends that trap most people today are, for someone more capable, simply non-problems. A more skilled person would reverse the situation entirely — no question. Bring it back to fundamentals. It comes down to the individual.

Reading this, many people will be annoyed. “Easy for you to say.” Fine — instead of arguing, take that energy and find a way through. There’s always a way.

From Master Chi’s perspective, life is truly like a seedling buried in gravel. If you find the right path, locate that small crack, and keep pressing through it — you will eventually break through the surface and stand on your own.

What I fear is you trapping yourself. Which is why I also say: most people are merely repeating, not practicing.

Read that sentence back to yourself: are you repeating your life, or are you practicing for the next level? This is something you must ask yourself honestly.

For me, nearly everything in life — serious work and hobbies alike — is exactly like picking antiques.

Only by constantly practicing, deepening your understanding, and elevating your awareness can you guarantee that your level stays high. When you’re an expert, you spot the good pieces in the market. When you’re not — and you still rely on luck and arrogance — you deserve to be deceived, and there’s nowhere to lodge a complaint.

But reaching that level of mastery cannot come from external pressure or a three-minute burst of enthusiasm.

It can only be achieved through wholehearted love and deep, sustained learning.

And this quality doesn’t show up in any single isolated behavior — it shows up in nearly everything you say and do throughout daily life.

For example: many ordinary people wonder why high-level figures almost universally have a few exceptional, remarkable hobbies.

The core reason is that before they ever reached their current professional heights, their habit was already to master things completely and study them deeply.

If you observe even briefly, you’ll notice that China’s business elite clearly lag behind the old state compound (大院) families and princeling circles in this regard.

Your typical business magnate tends to play with things that are direct and simple — cars, watches, luxury goods.

That’s not entirely wrong — when you’re out in the world, you need a few things to hold your position. I myself own a Jacob & Co celestial watch and a few Patek Philippes. But those are for impressing the middle class and navigating social occasions.

Supercars? What man doesn’t love showing off? But it still reeks of vulgarity. Why? Because anyone with money can buy them. There’s no depth of mastery behind it.

What truly commands a room — and signals something to those who can read the signal — is something that, the moment you produce it, is worth another person’s entire middle-class net worth.

Yes, everyone thinks these things are old-fashioned, conservative, and dated. But if you want to move in those circles, you have to have them.

Why? Because it’s not about grinding hard to extract wealth in this generation — it’s about having already been established the generation before.

The same logic applies to hobbies: you need a few things you can actually perform at a genuine, excellent level. Don’t walk around with misplaced confidence while every other sentence is about making money.

Pursue real excellence in your hobbies too. Only then can you extend that same mentality into your life and career.

Ask yourself: if a person doesn’t bother going deep in the things they love, how much drive will they really have in the areas they don’t even enjoy?

With that, let Master Chi wrap things up — it’s the weekend after all, and everyone wants to unwind. But even relaxation has its tiers: taking the family out for a cautious, budget-conscious outing versus fully relaxing with your loved ones at an Aman resort — these are very different things.

So I want to ask you: whether you love sports, mahjong, or video games — do you have the desire to truly master that hobby, see it through completely, and turn it into your signature craft?

If you do, treat it as your personal side business. Always pursue practice and progress — never waste or merely repeat.

Even with video games, you can chase top-tier rankings. Remember that chairman who was obsessed with Honor of Kings? A CEO of a publicly listed company, also ranked among the best players — that’s the point. A person of true depth masters everything they touch, unlike those at the bottom who fumble whatever they attempt.

I’m serious — nearly everyone in Master Chi’s circle has achieved something remarkable in their chosen hobby. Even stripped of their main careers, their hobbies alone would eclipse the average person.

A person of wisdom excels at everything they try. A person of mediocrity is blocked at every turn.

One final observation about life pattern (格局): people with even a slightly better destiny framework tend to do well at almost anything they try, because their level and perception are simply higher. And the moment their fortune / luck cycle (yunshe) finally aligns — there is no stopping them.
