Last time around, Dong Yuhui nearly stopped broadcasting altogether. Yu Minhong was genuinely sincere — he even gave up a great deal of personal benefit to keep Dong Yuhui — but the organizational structure that emerged looks like it may not hold.

So why would Dong Yuhui leave? Not necessarily because he has made up his mind to go, but because he is being pushed out by an atmosphere that insists he will. As the saying goes: if you use someone, don’t doubt them; if you doubt them, don’t use them. The truly dangerous thing is when a leader loses the inner capacity to manage and accommodate talented people — when they lose their confidence and sense of security, and begin to view their closest subordinates with suspicion. If you’re going to entrust someone with responsibility, stop second-guessing them. Using someone while doubting them is a dangerous thing for the one doing the managing — dangerous on two fronts: it threatens the success of the enterprise, and it breeds anxiety about one’s own position.

Oriental Selection has been convinced that Dong Yuhui will eventually walk, so they’ve taken all manner of preemptive measures — and in doing so, they may actually be accelerating his departure.

Others in this industry are undermined by outside competitors. Dong Yuhui, as one of Oriental Selection’s core competitive advantages, is being undermined by his own people. It happens because insiders inevitably develop a shared conviction: we are a platform — we can’t rely on any one individual, the risk is too high — and so the impulse to chip away at his prominence emerges on its own. It’s a natural expression of institutional anxiety.

Some viewers say they come to watch Dong Yuhui, not Oriental Selection. How does the company’s leadership receive that? If they treat it as a catastrophe, they’re already in trouble. If they treat it as perfectly normal, it shows they understand what’s truly at stake.
